Today, Congressman Jim Baird from Indiana's 4th District issued a statement following the passage of H.R. 5009, known as the Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025 (NDAA).
Baird expressed his support for the act by stating, "As a decorated Army combat veteran, I was proud to vote for this year’s National Defense Authorization Act, which represents a concerted effort to ensure our military has the resources it needs to keep our nation safe."
He acknowledged that while the bill is not perfect, it addresses several issues affecting service members' quality of life that impact recruitment, retention, and readiness. The NDAA includes provisions such as a 14.5 percent pay raise for junior enlisted members and a 4.5 percent pay raise for all other service members. It also tackles underfunding in military housing maintenance and improves access to medical care and childcare for Indiana's military families.
The act allocates over $60 million for military construction projects in Indiana. Furthermore, Baird highlighted that the NDAA focuses on strengthening military capabilities by deploying new technologies and preventing reductions in U.S. Special Forces or divestment of critical aircraft.
Additionally, Baird mentioned that the legislation halts policies related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Critical Race Theory (CRT), which he believes prioritize identity politics over preparedness.
In conclusion, Baird stated: "This legislation is a win for our national defense, Indiana’s service members, and our military families. I was proud to see this legislation pass the U.S. House, and I hope it is signed into law soon."
