Congressman Jim Baird recently addressed graduates at Purdue University's Winter 2024 Commencement ceremonies in West Lafayette, Indiana. A Purdue alumnus himself, Baird holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in animal science from the university. During his speech, he highlighted several themes including the value of a Purdue degree, his bipartisan efforts in Congress, his military service during the Vietnam War, and the significance of resilience, service, and sacrifice.

Baird emphasized the responsibility that accompanies earning a degree from Purdue University. He stated, “In receiving a Purdue degree, you are all receiving something extremely valuable, but with this great honor comes a responsibility to serve.” He urged graduates to uphold Purdue’s tradition of excellence.

Reflecting on his military service in Vietnam, Baird noted that veterans did not receive due recognition upon returning home. He remarked on their initial reception: “Our Vietnam Veterans did not receive the recognition and appreciation they deserved for a long time.” Despite these challenges, he expressed pride in serving his country.

Baird also spoke about resilience as an essential quality. He shared personal experiences from Vietnam where adaptability was crucial for survival and success. “There will always be roadblocks in life– an excuse not to do something,” he said.

A commitment to service was another key point in Baird's address. He encouraged graduates to make service a central part of their lives and careers: “If there is one common thread that binds your life and your career it should be a commitment to service.”

Finally, Baird discussed the CHIPS Act's impact on semiconductor research and development at Purdue. He praised Purdue’s leadership role: “This investment has allowed Purdue to become the nation’s leading university for the development of semiconductors.”
