Rep. Marlin Stutzman, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana's 3rd district, used his social media platform in early October 2025 to criticize Democratic lawmakers regarding ongoing budget negotiations and the potential for a government shutdown.
On October 3, 2025, Stutzman wrote: "Democrats are out of touch with real Americans. If they think a government shutdown will help them win in the midterms, they’re in for a rude awakening. Voters are sick of their political games."
The following day, he addressed recent legislative actions by Senate Democrats: "In March, Schumer and Senate Dems backed this exact same Republican-led continuing resolution to keep the government running. Now? They're choosing to play politics instead." On October 4, he continued his criticism with another post: "Democrats are so focused on opposing Trump and Republicans, they’re putting Americans LAST—blocking a clean, bipartisan budget to push nearly $200B in healthcare for illegal aliens. Put Americans first. Pass the CR."
These comments come as Congress faces renewed challenges over passing a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government and avoid a shutdown. The debate has centered around partisan disagreements over spending priorities and border security provisions.
Government shutdowns have become more frequent in recent years due to increased polarization between major parties over budgetary issues and policy riders attached to funding bills. Continuing resolutions are often used as temporary measures when Congress cannot agree on full-year appropriations.
