Hunter Mefford Shoots 4-Under at Daytona Beach Spring Invitational

Hunter Mefford shot a 4-under 68 in the second round of the Daytona Beach Spring Invitational on Monday (March 6), putting Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf in the middle of the pack after two rounds.

Mefford's 79-68-147 put him in 22nd place in the 116-player field. In his opening round, he had two stretches of five-straight pars. He birdied 14 as well. In the afternoon, Mefford had a bogey-free front nine of 33, dropping in birdies on four, five and seven. After making the turn, he moved to 5-under with birdies on 10 and 11, then birdied 16 to finish his day. His 68 was just one stroke shy of his career-best.

From the No. 3 spot, Burke Pitz had the second-best score on the team with a 75-74-149. He birdied hole six in his first time through the course, then had eight pars on the back nine. In his second round, he birdied holes five, seven and nine. He finished with 10 pars to go with his three birdies. He is in 30th  place with 18 to play.

Kasey Lilly started his round with eight bogey-free holes, including a birdie on hole five. He birdied the 14th and 18th holes to finish out his first round with a 74. He had a 77 in round two to total 151 for 43rd place. He birdied hole two and had 12 pars in the second round.

Jadden Ousley was tied with Lilly, shooting 75-76-151. He had birdies on eight and 11 in the morning and eight and 13 in the afternoon. He had a stretch of seven holes in a row without a bogey in round one, then had  nine in a row in the second. This included the birdie on 13.

Nick Holder rounded out the players competing for the team score, shooting 80-79-159. Holder started his day with a birdie on hole two, then saw a stretch of eight holes in a row of par or better. He had a birdie on 13 and pars on the rest. In round two, he carded 13 pars.

Reece Compton competed as an individual, shooting 82-73-155.

Purdue Fort Wayne is 10th in the 18-team field with a 303-295-598. The Mastodons are ahead of Horizon League foes Robert Morris (604) and Youngstown State (616).
